Believe it or not I did actually get some work done while I was on my own in the office yesterday but my mind insisted on wandering a little bit during the quieter times. More specifically, it insisted on wandering to Supernatural related stuffs--I'm shocked at this unforseen turn of events!--and I got thinking about 4x04 and Dean's use of a particular nickname. It seems to have caused a little controversy with some people thinking it's kind of adorable while others think it should never be spoken of again.
Well, here's my take on it. Sort of.

For me, the issue with the nickname is not that Dean used it but rather when he used it. The boys were at their angstiest. Dean had just hit Sam. Twice. Dean casually referring to Castiel as 'Cas' did not match the intensity of the scene at all and I think it took away from it a little.
Having said that, I think Dean calling Castiel 'Cas' is totally appropriate and in character for Dean. He's the type of guy who uses nicknames a lot. It also shows he's accepted Castiel to a certain degree. I chuckled when I heard him use it but it really shouldn't have been chuckle producing scene. We didn't need comic relief in the middle of it.
Would the nickname have been more widely accepted if Dean had used it for the first time during a regular conversation with Sam? Sam could have raised an eyerbrow and teased him endlessly about his pet name for his angel. Or perhaps during a conversation with Castiel himself?
Unfortunately the 'quiet times' at work were cut tragically short by a High Severity problem I had four hours to resolve so I had to finish the rest of this at home. Hope it doesn't suck too much. :)
In other news--Jared and Jensen are going to be in Sydney, Australia, for a HUB Convention in April 2009! OMG! *does happy dance*
Team!Shortbus - Can we skip the movie that weekend and go see the boys instead? Please? :D

I think you're right...Dean is a nickname kind of guy. Also? It's probably his way of compensating after Castiel slams him with the "I can put you back" threat. He's still gotta be the snarky, smartass Dean, especially in front of Sam, & what better way than to knock Castiel down a few pegs (or take away some of his "power" over Dean) by giving him a nickname. Of course, I really want to see the above scene played out on the show for real. *giggles in anticipation*
How cool for you to get both boys at the same time!!!!!!! Sheesh...with that comment, my mind went right into the gutter. *grin*

okay, so I guess I'll tell you what a think about the whole nickname thing...
honestly I didn't get shocked too much (truth be told at first I didn't even notice it) because like you said Dean is the kind of guy who uses nicknames a lot..
but yeah, the moment felt kind of wrong... I would have seen it better during a tease scene or maybe in a scene where Dean was pissed at Castiel and used the nickname in a hironical way...
but whatever, I don't care that much...

Yeah, whatever Dean wants to call Castiel is fine with me too but I really would like to see Dean call Castiel 'Cas' to his face. ;)

Have you noticed how Castiel always looks kind of concerned. He's going to have some serious lines on his forehead if he's not careful! His 'vessel' may not appreciate that too much ;)
