My random and extremely disjointed thoughts about Supernatural 4x01 - Lazarus Rising.

Warnings: Contains spoilers.

HOLY TAX ACCOUNTANT, BATMAN! How ACE was this episode! I was so nervous about the direction it was going to take but I don't think I could have asked for any more. It even gave me two of my Supernatural wishes. It was a brilliant way to start the season and I am so psyched for the rest of the season. BRING IT ON!!!

TEN THINGS I LOVED

  1. The recap.
Right off the bat we got our classic rock back. \O/ I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it. Using Acca Dacca's 'You Shook Me All Night Long' is up there with 'Carry On My Wayward Son' and 'Renegade'.

  2. Dean waking up six feet under.
I loved the terror in his eyes while he is in hell, or what I assume to be Hell. His darting looks, bloodied face, the flashes of light, the sounds, and then nothing. Just blackness and silence, except for Dean's breathing. I was freaking out along there with him as he realised where he was. However, they were treading very close to the line. Dean crawling out from six feet under? After four months? He sure was lucky the ground above his head was soft. Illinois: The Soft Dirt State.

  3. Dean walking along the road with his little bow legs.
    What?

  4. The Continuity.
Dean's tattoo. Dean's love of 'Busty Asian Beauties'. I don't know about you but any doubt about Dean being the real Dean went out the window there and then. If only he'd been holding that magazine when Bobby opened the door. Bobby would known it was him from the get go.

  5. Everything Sam knows about girls he learned from his big brother. *gigglesnort*
Oh, Sam. *hugs him* So, Bobby turns to bottle and Sam turns to the chicks to fill the Dean shaped void in his life.

QUESTION: Was the Kristy actually Ruby or did the actresses just look alike? *is confused* If it was Ruby, there is so much in the scene that doesn't make sense. Sam did nothing to make me think he was hiding the girl's true identity. He called her the 'wrong' name at the end but if it was really Ruby why would Ruby care and correct him. I guess she may have just wanted to embarrass him.

Then there's Kristy. Kristy showed no recognition of Dean when she opened the door. She looked at him and immediately looked at Bobby. I would have thought if it was Ruby she would have been as surprised to see Dean alive and kicking as Bobby and Sam were. Unless she knew he was back. It's never really been explained why Ruby is helping the boys kill demons. Is it possible that Ruby was recruited by the 'light side'. Is she perhaps an Angel of the Lord too? We never actually saw her excite katie!ruby's body, so we can't say for sure if she's all dark and smokey. Working for the light side would also explain how Ruby survived because given Lilith's powers I would have thought she'd have got rid of Ruby once and for all.

  6. The Hugging.
Dean and Bobby. Dean and Sam. I know we've seen Dean and Sam hugging before but up until now it's always been one sided. This is the first time the brothers have experienced the loss of each other at the same time and it shows. *hugs them both*

  7. Sam keeping Dean's Amulet safe and sound around his neck.
Sammy taking it off and handing it back to Dean, who immediately puts it back on, was like Christmas 1991 all over again.

  8. My Supernatural Wish #2: Sam and his special powers.
Sam not exploring his powers has never really made sense to me so I am so glad he is now. I can't quite figure out what Ruby and Sam are up to but I can't wait to find out!

  9. My Supernatural Wish #1: There is good out there and Castiel.
It's about time the 'light side' showed up to lend a hand. It stands to reason that if there is so much evil out there then there would be a lot of good too. I just hope Castiel is really who he says he is and his boss is who he says he is. I also hope every time he shows up he looks like that! I'm a little concerned he won't because Dean and Bobby shot that body up pretty badly. :(

QUESTION: Why did Castiel take four months to pull Dean out of Hell? Or why did God take four months to command it? Surely it doesn't take that long to file the paperwork in Heaven (or where ever God and Castiel hang out). My spin on it is that when Dean went to Hell there wasn't work for him to do but now, four months later, there is. Does that have something to do with Sam developing his powers. But then that contradicts Ruby working for the light side. Oh, dear. Now I've confused myself.

  10. Because God Commanded it.
Yep, we know he did because he wrote the script. Nice one Kripke! Even he thinks he's God. *g*

SEVEN THINGS I LIKED

  1. Bobby.
He's had a rough four months, turning to booze to help him cope with the loss of his boys. *hugs him* I loved his disbelief of Dean, really being Dean, and how he repeatedly tried to kill him. Throwing the Holy Water in his face was perfect. *snort*

  2. Ruby.
I'm glad she back... sort of. (see #1 in 'Things I did not so much care for')

  3. Sammy 'douching up' the Impala.
    *giggle*

  4. Pamela.
The interaction between her and the three boys was excellent. Pity about her eyes but hopefully we haven't seen the last of her.

  5. Scaredy Cat Demons.
The demons in the diner weren't willing to harm Dean because they weren't sure who yanked him out of Hell, right? At the end of 'No Rest for the Wicked' we saw that Sam had immunity from Lilith. It looks like Dean may have some kind of immunity against Demons too.

  6. Secrets. Secrets. Secrets.
Sammy lying to Dean about Ruby being dead and about not using his 'freaky ESP stuff'. They are two huge ass lies and when it all comes to a head, it ain't going to be pretty. And Dean is having those flashes back to Hell and not telling Sam or Bobby about them. I suspect he won't either. I also don't think he's going to tell Sam and Bobby the truth about who pulled him out of Hell. There was a reason why Bobby was knocked out in that scene.

I admit, I wasn't sure where to put this one. It's not that I don't like it because it creates an interesting dynamic between the brothers but I don't like it when the boys hide things from each other. *cries*

  7. Castiel showing his wings.
It was a little 'Touched By an Angel' but I kinda liked it all the same. At least he didn't start glowing Roma Downey style.

TWO THINGS I DID NOT SO MUCH CARE FOR

  1. Not!Katie Ruby.
    I miss Katie Cassidy. :(

  2. The Waitress at the diner.
For an agonising couple of minutes there I thought she might be Ruby. Thank Castiel's boss she wasn't. Did not like her.

FAVOURITE QUOTES.

Impala radio: *emo music plays*
Dean: Really?
Sam: *shrugs*
Sam's iPod: *meets backseat*

Dean: Dude, I am so in.
Sam: Yeah, she's going to eat you alive.
Dean: Just got out of jail. Bring it!
Pamela: (to Sam) You're invited too, grumpy.
Dean: YOU ARE NOT INVITED!

Dean: The smarter brother's back in town.

Dean: It's high noon, baby! (to Bobby *g*)

Bobby: We could Choose Life. (Did anyone else have visions of Bobby wearing a 'Choose Life' tee-shirt or does that just show my age?)

Dean: Holy Tax Accountant.

I don't think we could have asked for a better episode to kick the season off with. Thanks to Kripke and Co., we are in for such a wild ride this season.
