I mentioned yesterday things have cooled down in Melbourne a fair bit since last week. No cat is more grateful than Winnie Winchester. The high temperatures knocked her about and she was extemely lethargic. She spent most days just hanging out in the bedroom with air conditioning and she didn't even complain about being locked up all day. She's a smart cat. :)
Thursday night I took her outside, thinking it had cooled down enough (it was a lot cooler outside the house than inside) but Winnie being Winnie took the opportunity to run from one side of the garden to the other. Silly cat. I had to bring her back inside after about 10 minutes because she was panting! She was that hot.
The worse part of it was that was the night the power went off so I couldn't even turn the air conditioning on for her to rest in. She wasn't panting continually but on and off for about 30 minutes and stay put in one spot for more than a minute or two. I ended up lying on the tiles in the entry way with her in the hope she would finally rest. There was a coolish breeze coming through the screen door and that was enough to cool her down. It was not a fun hour or so, let me tell you.
Now that the temperatures are back in the normal range she's fine. We've been outside every day and she's venturing further and further. She's even been in next doors front yard. Luckily I was able to entice her back by getting her to chase a stick.

When she's outside Winnie is always on the move. Whether she's attacking stray sticks...

or keeping her eyes on busy bees...
(the yellow streak in front of her face is a bee she had been watching)

or poking around in the shrubs, there's always something for her to do. :)
(She looks so small in this picture)

Another thing about Winnie being outside means when she gets back inside she will be exhausted. This was taken the other night after she'd spent about 30 minutes running around outside. She was obviously hungry but after a chomping on her biscuits for a few minutes she just couldn't keep her eyes open. It was like watching an exhausted little kid fall asleep in their plate of spaghetti. ♥
