I'm trying to clean up my Laptop hard drive. The disk is 160GB disk with about 4GB free. Understandably, things are not working as they should.

Funny enough, one of the main culprits is a directory called ...\katy\A My Tv\supernatural\ which weighed in at a hefty 38.4 GB (11,668 files, 391 folders).

I've moved it off onto an external hard drive but I don't trust them so I'm trying to copy it to DVD as a backup. Castiel forbid I'd hate to lose anything! For some reason my DVD writer doesn't like writing from the external disk so I have to copy the data I want to burn to DVD back to a temp directory on the laptop. This is the current status message I'm getting:

That's 30 years! o_O

Just a 'little' long. I mean, if it was only, say, 25 or 26 years it'd be cool. ;P

I think you should buy a second external drive. It will arrive long before the back-up is finished. ;)

Seriously, I had the same problem with my laptop, and that's what I did. If both drives have 9-pin FireWire, the transfer is fast. And my Supernatural collection takes up 36.4 GB. What do you have that I don't have? LOL!

From: [identity profile] katysam.livejournal.com

Good idea.

You lost me there for a second with the techno-babble... What is this 9-pin FireWire you talk about? ;D

It turns out it just seemed to have an issue with Ep 1x05 (I don't like to even type the name...) Once I removed that from my selection it was all good.

How funny is it that our Supernatural collections are fairly close in size? :D Of course, I'm not really sure when a couple of GB was 'close' but considering they are both over 30GB anyway, it's kind of close. lol

Hard drives can connect to your computer via USB, 6-pin FireWire, or 9-pin FireWire ports, and each one is a little faster. Some drives have ports for all three. My old laptop didn't have 9-pin FW.

Well, I have every single episode from iTunes, and that folder alone is 32 GB. :) The rest is made up of pictures of the boys, fanvids I've saved, and icon files. I imagine your pic file is a lot bigger since you have so many you took yourself, but OTOH that might be on a separate directory altogether. Suffice to say we both love our show! \o/

Ah, okay. My drive is connected via USB, which I guess is the slowest.

My Jared photos from Supanova last year were in a separate folder. If I added them to the Supernatural folder there would be an extra 5.63GB. :) I've managed to get my SPN folder down to about 7GB which includes the S4 episodes/pictures, etc, so far plus the new Jensen pics and my favourite fanfics. I can't bring myself to remove them from the actual laptop yet. :)

Here's something to look at while you're waiting.

Ooh, nice. Thanks. I appreciate that. *stares*

The sad, or good, thing is that I don't think I'd get sick of staring at that photo even if I was doing it for 30 years. *g*

30 years to burn season 1 onto a DVD?!? And here I got discouraged when I discovered it would only take something like 6 months to download a Blu-Ray version of the movie Serenity.

From: [identity profile] katysam.livejournal.com

I'd be discouraged with a six month download too. I get frustrated when something takes more than two hours. If only we had more patience... ;D

The 30 years wasn't even to burn a DVD it was just to copy files from an external drive to the internal drive. o_O Turns out episode 1x05 was giving me grief. :(

From: [identity profile] katysam.livejournal.com

Yep. I wonder if work would have been understanding if I called up this morning and said I can't come in because I'm waiting for some files to copy across and I won't be in until 2039. ;P

Sheesh, 30 years?? *sits with you and passes you the popcorn*

I've also got limited space on my harddrive left which is why I'm burning things to DVDs until I can get an external harddrive. :(

From: [identity profile] katysam.livejournal.com

Thanks for the company. :D

I'm beginning to think DVDs are the way to go anyway. I'm so paranoid I'm going to drop the external drive and break it and all my precious pictures of Jensen and Jared and Misha will be lost forever. As a result, I'm making backups of backups. It's kind of sad really. :D

From: [identity profile] rose-janice.livejournal.com

Anytime at all. :)

LOL, aww that's not sad. *pets* Better safe than sorry.

Well, good luck, haha. ;) Computers are so stupid sometimes. I better copy some stuff to a dvd as well to make some room on my hard drive.

From: [identity profile] katysam.livejournal.com

Heehee, thanks. :) I finally managed to get it done and, luckily, in much less time than 30 years.

From: [identity profile] katysam.livejournal.com

It's crazy that it even predicts that high. Who's sitting there for 30 years waiting for files to copy? I gave up not long after I posted this. Obviously, I have no patience... ;)

From: [identity profile] vella-amor-dm.livejournal.com

LOLOL!!! i would have just left it for the day. it can't possibly be longer than THAT!

From: [identity profile] whimsywinx.livejournal.com

I hope you're not still waiting.

Your icon made me laugh, though.

From: [identity profile] katysam.livejournal.com

*taps foot impatiently*

Nah, just kidding. I gave up soon after I posted this. It's all good now. :)

From: [identity profile] katysam.livejournal.com

If only I'd thought to call Chuck! I'm sure he would have been able to make it copy faster than 30 days. ;)

I've been good. Busy but good. How about you? Still plurking? *hugs*

From: [identity profile] bananabehr.livejournal.com

Maybe he would make it last the 30 years so he would never have to leave you... *sigh* Oh, Chuck, how I love you!

You know me, I'm a bit of a plurk whore... we miss you over there, you know!
