Supernatural 3x02 - Five things I loved, One thing I liked and One thing I did not so much care for.

Five things I loved:

  1. The 'Horror' Factor.

  2. Despite it's mission of being a mini horror movie every week, truth be told, Supernatural has never really scared me. I mean, really given me the creeps. Sure, the scarecrow in 'Scarecrow' freaked me a little but no episode has ever given me the hair-standing-up-on-the-back-of-my-neck-chills this episode provided. The dude's gory demise in the opener had me clamping my hands over my eyes and peaking through my fingers. When the mom looked in the rear vision mirror and saw Katie's true form, I actually jumped. And those kids were just plain creepy. *shudder*

  3. Sam and Dean's Conversation in the Diner.

  4. We saw plenty of Dean and perhaps just a little bit less of Sam in this episode but there were very few scenes of Sam&Dean. My favourite of these was the exchange in the diner at the very beginning. Sammy's extremely unsuccessful attempt to cover up his phone call to Bobby by saying he was ordering a pizza was priceless. Okay, Weirdy McWeirderton. Of course, Dean's correct response would have been, "Dude, you do realise that everyone knows you NEVER eat?" Sammy seems so much more relaxed this week, even though he's obviously working double time trying to find a way to McGyver Dean out of his crossroads deal. And while, in this early scene at least, I don't think Dean has changed much in his attitude from last week, I actually laughed out loud at his, ''C'mon, have a heart! It's my dyin' wish". Sammy's resigned little smile shows us he's accepted Dean's attitude, for the time being, and I guess if Sammy can, I can too. Also, is it my imagination of did the boys also go all 'Texan' in during that part of the conversation?

  5. "Look out ladies, here comes trouble", aka Ben.

  6. This kid was adorable. He really was such a mini!Dean. The music, the chicks, and even the language - "Only bitches send a grown-up... and I'm not a bitch." (Do guys actually call other guys bitch in real life? I've never ever heard it before watching Supernatural...) One thing about the whole Ben thing confuses me; Why make him such a little clone of Dean if Dean isn't really his father? Personally, I think Gumby!Girl lied. Perhaps we haven't seen the end of her, or Ben. I hope we haven't.

  7. Almost Daddy!Dean.

  8. I loved seeing Dean interacting with Ben. The thought he may be his son is planted as soon as Lisa tells Dean Ben is turning eight. Dean being a wiz with the maths, does a quick calculation... Could it be? A brief conversation with Ben soon has Dean thinking, not only is it entirely possible Ben is his son, but it is also entirely probable.

I said earlier, in the beginning of the episode Dean's attitude hadn't changed much from last week. Of course, by the end of the episode we see this isn't true. Dean's encounter with Lisa and Ben gives him a glimpse of what could have been. What could still be. Or at least what could still be if he hadn't made the deal. I don't believe this will be enough for Dean to fully regret his decision. After all, Sammy comes first, right? But I don't think he's going to be able to hide the inevitable feelings of regret, which were bound to bubble up to the surface, for too much longer. When Dean finally breaks, it's going to be into a million pieces. We've gone two episodes now without seeing the patented single!tear from Dean. It's only a matter of time.

  9. Sammy on a Mission.

  10. So, Sammy can't cover up who he was on the phone with when Dean walks in on him but he can convince a whole bunch of people he is someone he isn't to find out what happened to his Mom's friends 25 odd years ago. *lol* I guess he loves his brother too much to lie, or to lie convincingly. Oh, Sammy.

I am loving Sam this season and I think it's because his attention has shifted from himself to others, namely Dean but also to his mother and her past. It looks very much like Sammy is going to be the one with all the secrets this season and I think they are pretty big secrets. Sam is already trying to find a way to help Dean and then Ruby turns up, seemingly knowing all about Marry and her friends. Sam, not being able to leave it alone, especially after YED showed him that vintage family movie in AHBL1, digs up the information that all of Mary's friends and relatives are dead.

I admit I'm a little confused over this. Did they all die after Mary died? Sammy tells Ruby everyone who knew his mom are all dead and someone went through a hell of a lot of trouble covering their tracks. Ruby replies, "Yep. The Yellow Eyed Demon." The conversation continues and a little later Ruby says, "What happened to your mom. What happened to her friends. They're trying to cover up what he did, to you." So, who exactly are the 'they' Ruby is talking about? Who wanted to cover up what the YED did to Sam? The YED's minions? I'm guessing it was his minions.

One thing I liked:

  1. Ruby.

  2. Who saw THAT coming? *smugly raises hand* Okay, perhaps I was only half serious when I mentioned her being a 'demon with a soul' in my post, last week, about 'The Magnificent Seven', but I knew she couldn't just be a hunter. The fact she has now revealed herself to be a demon has raised a few questions:
    • Is she even a hunter?
    • She's a demon so that's not really her body, right?
    • How long has she been on earth, possessing that body?
    • Has she been around for a while or did she escape when the hell mouth was opened in Wyoming?
    • Why does she want to know about Sammy?
I can't wait to find out what she really wants. She has me intrigued and I really do like her.

One thing I did not so much care for:

  1. Music, or lack there of.
  2. (yep, there isn't much I didn't like about this episode. *lol*)
There were bits and pieces. I read earlier today, during the scene where Dean abandons Sammy outside the motel, is a Steve Carlson song. For the life of me, I can't figure out each one. I also can't figure out the one playing on Ben's Walkman. Anyone know?
But I'd love for there to be more music. The music is part of the reason I got hooked into this show. When there isn't much music, I miss.

BTW, if anyone knows spoiler answers for these questions, I don't really want to know, 'kay? *g*

Theories, on the other hand, I love. Bring 'em on. Tell me what you think.

I'm with you on everything. Even the part about Mary's death. I'm not sure if there was a mistake in Ruby's dialogue, because at first it seems like it was the YED covering up his tracks killing Mary's friends...but then, she says 'them', covering up the YED's tracks, like he fucked up or something. I'm quite sure Ruby's demon had something personal going with the YED, maybe she was his child or something? And she was jelous of Sammy's role in all this? Maybe that's why she's following. Ok, I'm totally intrigued.

MiniDean was so cute, I don't but for a whole minute him digging chicks like that, but I can accept it as a humour device, 'cause I'm not uptight as many others seem to be about this ^^'
And when he hugs Dean I was pratically melting on my seat.

Probably going against general fandom opinion, I enjoyed Sam and Dean having time far from each other, I can live without Sam/Dean for a while, it's not like in RL trwo brothers would live 24/7 in each other pockets, it's NOT realistical. And it makes me appreciate more when they are together :)
I think this gives them more personality development too, 'cause they seem to act more spontaneous when they are not together, and they don't have to hide their real feeling, don't you get this impression too? Or is it just me?!

And i liked the music, especially the cute sentimental piece, but I HATED with a passion the THING that was playing during the action scene, it made the scene seem like a videogame...

OH, I'm so curious about what Ruby is gonna ask of Sam now that she can 'blackmail' him with Dean, and to see what lengths Sam will go to save his brother...oh 3th episode where art thou?!?!

Mini!Dean was a bit young to be into chicks, wasn't he. At eight years old, aren't most boys and girls all "Eeewww, girl germs!" "Eeewww, boy germs!"?*lol* But, yeah, it was funny. Chasing the ladies is one of Big!Dean's most obvious personality traits so I guess they felt it should be thrown in there.

That moment in park; Dean changed that little boy's life. I thought it was really sweet when Ben ran back to hug Dean. I also really liked the scenes when Dean found Ben in the cage and Ben's put his little hand up and Dean reached out to him. I really do hope we see Ben again.

You are right about real life brothers not spending all their time together, however, I like that Dean and Sam never seem to get sick of each other despite how much time they are together. It's not entirely realistic, but it's nice. It makes their relationship all that more special and shows us they really do share a unique bond.

Someone posted some screen caps of the episode and pointed out in one that Sammy had a straw in his drink. It was when he was alone in the diner, when Ruby comes in. Can you imagine Sammy drinking through a straw when Dean was around? Dean would never let him live it down! *lol* So, yeah, even little things are different when they aren't around each other. More so, I think, with Sam than Dean.

Did I not comment to this? Where have I been?

You know, I watched that scene again and asked myself that same questions about "they"... But, do you think she's just referring to YED's minions? There seemed to have been several. I like all of your questions regarding Ruby. I hope some of those answers are revealed soon.

The truth is, I find her (and her story arch) more interesting than the one with Bela. Bela is beautiful and kick ass but kind of annoying. I know I said I hated the idea of Ruby as a hunter but, as a demon, with her own cryptic agenda, she's like a puzzle that needs to be solved.

I love it when the boys make me laugh and they certainly have these last couple of weeks. Can't wait for your recap of 3.03.

Yes! Where exactly have you been? *wink*

I think she is referring to YED's minions. But why do they want to cover up what YED did? Was he that careless? I don't think he could have been, because lets face it, it took the Winchesters 23 years to catch up with him. And they are very good hunters... most of the time. *g* Or did it take that long because the minions did a good job at covering it up?

Or was it Mary's friends who tried to cover up what the YED did, and they all got caught in the crossfire? I can't help but think I've missed something, somewhere.

Having a demonic side to Ruby is going to add a nice twist to the story. I like the way they've established her character so far.

And I agree with you about Bela. She hasn't impressed me. Yet. I don't hate her, and as a once off character I liked her well enough, but I'm not sure I want to see her in it every second week. It's surprised me a bit because when I first read about the two characters, I immediately thought I was going to like Bela and not Ruby. Turns out it's the other way around.

I just posted my recap of 3x03 :)

YES! I've been reading lots of squee over Bela but she didn't impress me. Her "chemistry" with Dean seemed manufactured, in a way. He was awesome when he broke into her apartment. I mean, that's what I like to see from Dean Winchester, breaking and entering like the best of them. She's beautiful and her character was interesting but not enough to be regular/recurring. I think you're the only person that agrees with me on this.

I thought the same thing about Ruby v. Bela before we met them. But Ruby as a demon (something I wished for), is a very pleasant twist. I like the darkness that surrounds her.

Anyway, I'm off to read your 3.03 recap. *hugs*

Lots of squee? Over Bela? Really?

I haven't read much about this episode because I'm stuck using a dialup internet connection and it's slow at the best of times, let alone trying to read anything on LJ *head desk* I'll have to try and remember to go back and read what people have written because my first impression about Bela is, there isn't much to squee over.

As a character, Ruby is way better than Bela. *nods*
