★ Speculation on where it's all gonna end ★

Sam: You know what I mean Dean. I mean, do you think we'll still be chasing demons when we're sixty?
Dean: No. I think we'll be dead. For good.

Those two lines hit me like a ton of bricks.

Like many of you, I've been watching Supernatural from the get-go and it wasn't long after the get-go got going I came to the conclusion the show could only end in one way. It would end in death; for both boys. One brother cannot continue to live without the other. It's as simple and as heartbreaking as that.

Hearing the above exchange between Dean and Sam, I suddenly I realised it was really going to happen. For real or as real as can be for a fictional tale about fictional brothers hunting fictional demons helped by a fictional angel, one more fictional demon and, occasionally, a fellow fictional hunter.

I believe Sammy held on when Dean was in hell because he truly believed there was a way to bring Dean back. Also, in the scheme of things four months isn't very long. If Castiel hadn't gripped Dean tight and raised him from perdition it would have been a different story for Sam. More months would have passed and those months would have turned into years and Sam would have lost hope. Sure, he may have survived for a few more years but he wouldn't have 'lived'.

Same goes for Dean. We already know what he was willing to do to bring back Sam.

I've managed to think of five possible scenarios for ending the show, however, there is only one I think fits almost perfectly.

★ ★ ★

Scenario 1: The Disney Ending
Dean and Sam are looking out over the Grand Canyon. Sam turns to look at Dean. Dean looks at Sam and gives him a grin. They've done it. They've saved the World and now it's time to get day jobs. Both boys return to the Impala and after finally nailing shutting their doors at the exact same speed and tine, they drive away into the distance.

This is not going to happen, right? Surely Kripke would not allow this to happen. He likes torturing us. Of course it's not going to happen.

But, if this does happen they might as well join hands and skip to the Impala for good measure. As lovely as it sounds, given their lives and jobs, it's not very believable. Sure I like to imagine the boys living together in a pretty little cottage with a white picket fence, spending their days doing the crossword puzzle from the New York Times and cooking their way through the recipes from The Martha Stewart Cookbook but I don't think I want to see it. That's what fanfic is for. :D

Scenario 2: The Kripke really must hate us ending V1.0
Dean dies. Sam is distraught. Curtains close. Viewers are distraught. OMG! The pain for Sam! The pain for the fans! *cries*

OK, so this could happen. As mentioned above, Eric Kripke does like torturing us. But does he like that much? Imagine having the show end and knowing that Sam was going to have spend the rest of his life, long or short, with such immense sorrow knowing that Dean was no longer with him.

Scenario 3: The Kripke really must hate us ending V2.0
Sam dies. Dean is distraught. Curtains close. Viewers are distraught. OMG! The pain for Dean! The pain for the fans! *cries*

Rinse and repeat - See Scenario 2.

Scenario 4: The Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Ending
Dean and Sam are looking out over the Grand Canyon. Sam turns to look at Dean. Dean looks at Sam and gives him a grin. They may have saved the World but the World will probably need saving many more times. Both boys return to the Impala. Dean open the trunk, Sam throws in a shotgun and together they say those magical words, "We've got work to do." *fades to black*

Dean and Sam would look great in the 'big screen', don't you think? End the show like this and there's always the possibility they could come back to visit us in another time and another place, especially if the season four ratings hold steady. The Supernatural franchise could just keep on rollin'. \O/

Appealing as this sounds on one level, on another I think I'd feel cheated. It's an easy way out and I don't want to be thinking the boys have to do this type of work for the rest of their lives. Like Sammy said tonight, he doesn't want to be doing this when he's an old man. He wants to work in a library or teach or be a zoo keeper when he grows up. Not sure about Dean. A sheriff perhaps or a new member of Leverage Consultancy? Although he and Eliot might clash heads.

And the winner is:

Scenario 5: The Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Ending
aka. The Thelma and Louise Ending.
Both boys die in a blaze of glory, on their own terms, to save the world, or at least making it possible for other to save/protect the world. The End. *sobs*

It just makes sense. I'll be crying like you would not believe - in fact, I'm tearing up right now - but when all said and done the boys will finally get some rest! Just imagine it. Mary and John are already 'upstairs'. Little big Dean and Sammy can run across the heavenly field of daises into their Mon and Dad's open arms. Grandpa Samnual and Granny Deana will be there, heads tossed back and laughing with pure joy. And Jessica. She'll be there too. Sam will be so happy. There'll be barbeque and beer and I'm sure there will be a girl or two for Dean. Or he can just hang out with Castiel. It'll be just like Heaven. *twirls*

Yeah, so, we're not going to see all that because, hello, corny! But we can at least imagine the boys will be at peace. They've had this burden on their shoulders for way too long. By 'on their own terms' I don't necessarily mean suicide. I just mean they won't be killed by a spell or sent to hell by Lilith or any other demon. They will die a 'natural' death, most likely sacrificing themselves to help others. They'll be doing their job to the very end.

I mentioned earlier I came to the conclusion both brothers will die very early on in the piece. At the time I thought, 'Excellent! It'll give me time to prepare. I know it's coming. It'll be all good.' If this episode has taught me one thing it's - I'M NOT PREPARED FOR THEM TO DIE!!! Not now. Not ever. *sobs*

Damn you show for making me care so damn much!

When the show finally does end I'll probably look back on this and laugh because I'm sure Kripke, Gamble, Shiban, and the rest of the awesome writers over at Supernatural HQ will come up with the best way to end a show, ever. Yeah, I should probably just stop worrying... :)

Holy crap! I can't remember the last time I wrote so much about this show!
Have I ever written that much about it?

Haha. Sorry, but I can't see scenario 6 happening either. That's another one for those fanfic writers to take care of. :D

I don't want to see them dying but I, like lots of people it seems, have a bad feeling about it. *cries with you*
