Supernatural 3x12 - "Jus in Bello"

Supernatural 3x12 - Five things I loved, two things I liked, four things I did
not so much care for and three things I've been left to ponder.

Things I loved:

  1. Henricksen
How awesome that he came back! I think he came over to the 'light' side to easily and too quickly but it was wonderful having him on their side. I particularly liked the interaction between Dean and Henricksen. It was interesting to hear a little from a character who has only just found out about the supernatural world. They've touched on it before with Det. Diana Ballard in 'The Usual Suspects' and I really hoped this time they would explore it a little further. Would Henricksen have become a hunter? Would he stay in the FBI and become a sympathiser to the Hunters' cause, like those described in the Supernatural tie-in novel, Nevermore?

  2. Dean's got nothing to go home to but his brother
    It's enough.

  3. Ruby
What's with her being willing to kill herself? I panicked she was actually going to die and I kept thinking, 'No! Kill Bela instead!!!' Is Ruby good? Is Ruby bad? You know what? I honestly don't care. I can't work her out - at all - and I love it. I hope she doesn't end up double-crossing the boys but I enjoy not knowing what to expect from her.

  4. The Big Damn Battle
Guns! Salt! Physical violence! It was just like the good ol' days before mystical knives and magic pistols. The ending, however... (see 'Things I did not so much care for')

  5. Peter Deluise

"We never thought of finding a place where we belong, You don't have to stand alone, we'll never let you fall
Don't need permission to decide what you'll believe....
You're gonna learn something when we meet you after school!
I said jump, down on Jump Street, Said jump! Down on Jump Street!
Your friends will be there when your back is to the wall, you'll find you need us 'cause there's no one else to call
When it looks hopeless, a decision's what you need,
You better be ready 'cause you're running out of time!
I said Jump! 21 Jump Street"

Supernatural could totally adapt that song for a theme song. *nods*

Things I liked:

  1. The new 'Big Bad' as a Kid
She really is a kid. Does this mean they can stop referring to Sam and the others as 'Special Kids'? Sammy's what, 25??? He's not a kid anymore! *g*

  2. White Eyes
First black, then yellow, then red and now white. Hell is clearly a lot more colourful than I imagined.

Things I did not so much care for:

  1. It made me feel so dumb
Okay, this is a personal issue I have and it's not fair to lump it on the show itself but I have no clue who Lilith and Samael and all these other figures people are talking about are. Honestly, I have trouble remembering who Adam and Eve are let alone know who any of these older and more obscure characters. I guess I have a couple of months to do some research and get up to speed on this stuff. Anyone got any suggestions? *sigh*

  2. Bela
Hate her! Hate her! Wouldn't want to date her!
She is a fudgin' bitch. That's all I have to say.
Except... Why would she call the cops on the boys? She is already two states away. She outwits them all the time. Why bother calling in the feds? Surely they are more useful to her out and about finding artifacts which she can waltz in and steal from under their noses. If the demon army hadn't decided to attack the police station the boys most likely would have been locked up. They couldn't see a way to MacGyver their way out of that situation and niether could I.

  3. Henricksen Dying
He could have been handy to have around for the war, especially with him being in the position he was in. Having an ali in the FBI would have been extremely helpful. Sure, he would have ended up dying in the end but at least then I wouldn't need to worry so much about Bobby or Ellen (if she ever comes back) being killed off.

  4. The Latin Exorcism Recording
Boy, what a great idea. But why haven't they come up with this before? They could have tape players clipped to their belts (that's BELTS, not butts) and just hit play whenever they need to get rid of a pesky demon. Especially handy for Dean and others who didn't pay too much attention during latin class. *face palm* When it first started playing my first thought was, "No! It's got to be a human voice!" Yeah, okay, I watched 'Buffy'. In the episode, 'Hush' the only way to kill the Gentlemen was with a voice. Willow suggests using a CD. It's a recording of a voice, right, so why not? But Giles says no, it's got to be a real human voice. It makes things trickier for our heroes but in the end the resolution is ultimately more satisfying. The latin recording seemed to be taking the easy way out.

Things I've been left to ponder:

  1. Bela's Motive
Why would she want the Winchester boys arrested and locked up? Who is going to steal stuff from and annoy now?

  2. Why Demons Attack
Why did the demons decide to attack the police station? It was Lilith who organised it, right? I mean she turned up at the end because the job wasn't done properly. How did she know they were there? Given that she waited until this moment, Demons aren't real good on tracking down the boys, are they? So, she was told? Did Bela tell her? Did Peter Deluise tell her?

  3. How deep is our show?
I mentioned not knowing a lot of the mythology the show is based on and I feel like I should know it... like I need to know it to understand the show. Do I really? Is Supernatural really 'that' deep or are they just borrowing names?
